Thinking about opposites and their unity... the simultaneous existence of these flies trapped on fly paper, but buzzing. Still and moving. Silent and deafening. Do these conditions mirror aspects of people, and the ways they work together, or oppose each other? Will they break free of the paper? Is it still paper once the flies have taken over its surface?

I often use art as a way of exploring political and social theory, successfully or not. This particular exercise was around the Marxist/Hegelian concept of "aufheben." Imagery from house flies stuck on fly paper.

Original on 16 mm color film. Images sourced from 35mm slide, letterpress print, and hand-drawn lettering. Moving film created with an animation stand.
